INFANT BAPTISM GUIDELINES
Our parish family here at Sacred Heart welcomes you and your child. Baptism marks a significant event in the life of your child and your family, for through Baptism your child becomes a member of the Body of Christ, the Church. Moreover, the newly baptized is given the status of being an adopted child of God. Baptism also opens the doors to the other sacraments, which allows for spiritual growth and support.
We ask that you read the following guidelines carefully. If some questions should arise, please do not hesitate to contact us. We want your child’s Baptism to be a spiritual and memorable event.
May God bless you as you prepare to begin this journey of faith with your child.
FOR OUR REGISTRY, THE OFFICE WILL NEED THE FOLOWING DOCUMENTATION:
- The completed Sacrament Data form.
- A copy of your child’s birth certificate. (Adoption papers when applicable.)
- If parent class was taken elsewhere or at an earlier date at Sacred Heart, a letter or certificate will be required stating where and when you have taken the class (or an approximate date of Parent Class if taken at Sacred Heart.)
- The names of the final choice(s) for Godparent(s) with correct spelling as they will appear on the Baptismal Certificate.
SCHEDULING OF YOUR CHILD’S BAPTISM:
Baptisms will only be scheduled when the parents have attended the Baptism class or provided a certificate/ letter of attendance elsewhere and all documents in the list above have been provided.
To schedule the Baptism, you must call the church office at (928) 445-3121 or email Baptism@SacredHeartPrescott.com when you have completed all the requirements in order to get your name on a specific schedule for Baptism.
**** A priest or deacon will call you to verify date and time ****
PRE-BAPTISM CLASS: As your child grows in faith and knowledge, you as parents are the most influential force in his/her life. Your example through the active participation in your Faith life will help your child come to Christ. Therefore, it is important that you see the value in preparing yourself as well as your child to take this significant step. We ask both parents to attend the Parent Class if they have not attended in the past two years.
GODPARENTS: Your choice of Godparents is very important. A Godparent is a witness to your child in modeling the Faith life of the entire community. Through you and their Godparents, your child will come to know Christ. Children need to have at least one Godparent, but it is strongly recommended that they would have two, one male and one female. Godparents must be Catholic, at least sixteen years of age, have received the three sacraments of initiation (Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation) and be active in their Faith – attending Mass on a weekly basis. If they are married, the marriage must be a valid, recognized marriage in the Catholic Church (in the presence of a Catholic priest or deacon).
A baptized person of another Christian denomination cannot be a Godparent. They are invited to be a Christian Witness if baptized in another denomination, and we welcome them, but they cannot be the Godparent of record. The Godparents represent the community of Faith into which the child is being baptized. For this reason, it is required that only those who are practicing Catholics be Godparents. In addition, the Godparents are chosen to instill and support the Faith of the community in which the child will one day receive the Sacraments.
What are the requirements to be a Godparent?
- A Catholic person, who is not a parent, who has received all 3 sacraments of Initiation: Baptism , Holy Communion, and Confirmation.
- They must be at least 16 years old.
- A practicing Catholic who attends Mass weekly.
- If married, a person who was married in the Catholic Church. (Please note that being legally separated and/or divorced does not in itself prevent a person from serving as a Godparent. However, one who is separated or divorced must be living as a single person and not living with someone else unless the prior marriage was annulled by the Church.
Must we have both a Godfather and a Godmother?
No. While it is customary to have both a Godfather and a Godmother, the Sacrament of Baptism requires a minimum of one Godparent who meets all of the requirements listed in the paragraph above. Note: it is not possible to have two males or two females as Godparents.
Can a non-Catholic be a Godparent?
If a person is not Catholic, but is a baptized Christian who belongs to a non-Catholic denomination and a good example of Christianity in practice, he may participate, together with a Godparent who meets all the requirements above, as a Christian Witness of the Baptism (Canon Law, Can. 874.2). They would not be listed as a Godparent, but as a Christian Witness.
Do Godparents have to attend the Baptism class?
This is highly recommended! They will be your child’s Godparents forever, so it is great for them to show that commitment from the very beginning! If they cannot attend the class here at Sacred Heart, they are encouraged to attend an equivalent class offered at their own parish/area.
Can I just have a Christian witness instead of a Godparent?
No. Remember that a baptized non-Catholic is not the same as a Godparent. Thus a Christian Witness may be chosen only if a Catholic Godparent has already been chosen for your child. A Christian Witness is chosen in addition to a Catholic Godparent not in place of a Catholic Godparent.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL
Inspired by Gospel values, our members come together to grow spiritually as we serve others. Whether we’re making home visits or meeting people that need help in our office, we’re serving the Lord.
If you’d like to learn more about this international organization, check us out any Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. downstairs in the church. It takes eight people to fill the volunteer positions each weekday, and one of these positions might be a perfect fit.
January 2012 -
It’s the beginning of a new year, and the perfect time to thank our many volunteers for their loyal help. Did you know that only the Thrift Store Manager, Asst. Manager, and warehouse workers are paid employees? Everyone else are volunteers. A big thank you to all for your hard work. The fact that so many people donate time to SVdP – both at the Thrift Store and the Conference -- shows how much they value working for the Lord.
As you know, the Conference on Summit St. runs on "volunteer-power." We need more volunteers so we can serve the hungry in a timely manner. Is the Lord calling you to donate a few hours each week to feed his children? Join us any Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. downstairs to learn more.

The Funeral Ministry plays a vital role in helping those at a time when they need it most. The Ministry's goal is to provide a funeral luncheon for families and friends of the departed.
There are a few ways in which you can participate.
You can either:
- Join a team and prepare and donate a dish to be served after a funeral.
- Volunteer to either help with set up and take down of tables and chairs for a luncheon. This usually takes 30 minutes at most.
- Volunteer to work a luncheon with other team members. You may be asked to do this once every 3 or 4 months at the most.
In our Parish, the Funeral Ministry plays an important part in ensuring the well-being of many of those who have given generously for years of their time and talent to Sacred Heart. At a difficult time, they need our help. I ask you to consider joining us this year to ensure that this Ministry carries on with a vibrant and blessed membership.
